The West Mill Black Tie Wedding - Rosie & Ben
There’s something about autumn weddings that just hits differently. The light, the colours, the cosy-but-stylish vibes — and when you pair that with a venue like The West Mill in Derby, you’ve got something pretty special.
This one felt effortlessly cool.
If you’ve never been to The West Mill, it’s one of those places that instantly feels like it’s meant for weddings. Industrial, yes, but in that really beautiful, soft way — exposed brick, original windows, and a riverside setting that’s just magic in the autumn light.
It’s also a dream for documentary wedding photography. The light spills in just right, the textures are perfect for natural portraits, and there’s so much space to move around without ever feeling staged or forced. I honestly love shooting here.
The bride wore this incredible fishtail dress by Elysee, with a dramatic ruffled hem that gave it so much movement. It hugged in all the right places but still felt romantic and soft.
Hair and makeup were kept natural, letting the dress (and her big smile) do the talking. She just radiated joy all day.
The groom and his best men were in classic tuxedos — black tie, bow ties, the lot. And honestly, it worked so well against the backdrop of The West Mill. It brought a bit of old-school glamour into the space, without feeling too formal or stiff. Just cool. Effortless.
The styling was minimal but beautiful. White roses & gypsophila, clean lines, and just the right amount of detail. The couple opted for white dried petal confetti, which floated through the air like snowflakes — one of those tiny choices that made for some of my favourite photos of the day.
This wedding reminded me exactly why I love shooting in a documentary style. No awkward posing, no interrupting moments — just real, genuine emotion, caught as it happens. The way the couple looked at each other during the ceremony. The quiet chats in corners. The loud laughter during speeches.
The West Mill is perfect for this kind of storytelling. The venue’s layout gives so much space for natural, honest coverage — from emotional getting-ready moments to those relaxed portraits by the river (which were chef’s kiss, by the way).
